Dark Patterns: Forevergram

Role: Game Design Intern --- Team Size: 2 --- Development Time: 20 days

Paid work developing an educational game exploring Dark Patterns and online design psychology.

The game was sponsored by InGAME and created remotely as part of Dundee Design Festival 2021 for the online Design House. Created with Unity.

Roles

As Game Design Intern I developed a game as part of Dundee Design Festival 2021 and hosted as part of their Digital Design House. Within this role I:

  • Translated initial brief into game concepts, from visual mock-ups to rapid prototyping.

  • Kept regular updates with festival producers and artist, ensuring game was on-track & followed the festival's values.

  • Created mock-up arts that were then developed by the project's artist.

  • Implemented animations to react to player actions.

  • Sourced & imported audio to fit the website experience.

Art produced by Zoë Arlidge-Lyon.

Goals

Forevergram's design was built around educating how Dark Patterns affect our online behaviour, specifically infinite scrolling and operant conditioning.

As a festival open to everyone, Forevergram's gameplay was focused on being:

  • Accessible to a wide audience

  • Instantly engaging & exciting gameplay

  • A short replayable experience
